Every few years, science produces a headline that makes you wonder whether someone accidentally mixed peer review with recreational drugs.

No, this was not an article from The Onion. It was an actual scientific paper. The authors revisited the panspermia hypothesis, the long standing idea that the basic ingredients for life may have arrived from space aboard comets or meteorites. That's a legitimate, if still unproven, question in astrobiology. Then they took a hard left turn into science fiction.
According to the paper, the octopus is so biologically unusual that perhaps its ancestors received genetic material from extraterrestrial viruses. In its most speculative passages, the authors even floated the possibility that fertilized octopus eggs survived frozen inside an icy comet before crashing into Earth hundreds of millions of years ago.
If Earth were secretly hiding an extraterrestrial, the octopus would be near the top of everyone's list. It has no bones.It can change both color and texture in seconds. It squirts ink when threatened. Nearly two thirds of its neurons aren't even in its brain. They're distributed throughout its arms, meaning each arm can process information with remarkable independence.
Octopuses solve puzzles, unscrew jars, escape aquariums, recognize individual humans, and occasionally make aquarium staff question their career choices.
The response from evolutionary biologists was less "You've changed everything we know about life" and more "Did anyone actually check the timeline?"
Scientists had already sequenced the octopus genome in 2015.
Octopuses share clear evolutionary ancestry with other mollusks. Their DNA fits neatly into Earth's family tree.
Virologist Ken Stedman also pointed out an inconvenient detail. Modern octopus lineages diverged from squid roughly 135 million years ago, not during the Cambrian Explosion some 540 million years ago, where the paper placed its cosmic intervention.
Dr. Steven Novella added another problem. Octopuses use the same genetic code, amino acids, and cellular machinery as every other organism on Earth.
If they're aliens, they're remarkably committed to fitting in.
Even another scientist publishing in the same journal gently suggested the evidence looked much more like ordinary evolution than visitors from another solar system.
Octopuses lost the protective shells their ancestors once carried. Without armor, intelligence became one of their best survival tools.
They also evolved extraordinary RNA editing, allowing them to modify how genes are expressed far more extensively than most animals.
The broader panspermia hypothesis remains an open scientific question. Organic molecules really do exist in meteorites, and scientists continue exploring whether life's earliest chemical ingredients may have traveled through space.
But that's a very different claim from saying a fully formed octopus hitchhiked to Earth inside a comet.
The evidence simply isn't there.
Still, it's hard to blame anyone for wondering.
