A Taste for Rays

Consider, for a moment, a harbour in New Zealand. The water is only a few metres deep, shallower than the ceiling of the room in which you are reading this, and the light filters down through it in soft, shifting bands. Somewhere below, half buried in the sand, a stingray lies still, trusting in its camouflage and in the venomous spine at the base of its tail, a weapon perfected over some 150 million years of trial and error. And somewhere above, cruising with the unhurried confidence of an animal that has never met its predator, comes an orca, Orcinus orca, the largest member of the dolphin family, and, in this one corner of the world, a connoisseur of dangerous seafood.

I want to tell you why this small, muddy stage matters as much as it does. Because what is happening in these harbours is nothing less than the biography of a culture, an orca culture, caught, for once, in the act of being written.

Killer whales live in every ocean of this small planet. They are, by any reasonable standard, one of the great success stories of evolution: intelligent, social, adaptable. 

In the North Pacific, some orcas have specialized in hunting fish. Others have specialized in hunting seals and whales. These are not different species. They are, in a very real sense, different civilizations, sharing a genome, but not a way of life.

This is not a trivial matter of taste. A stingray's spine is barbed, venomous, and entirely capable of killing an orca, and we know this because it has. Researchers have recovered the body of a young female orca with two such spines still embedded in her flesh, dead from blood loss or poison, a reminder that predation, even by the ocean's most formidable hunter, is never without cost. Evolution does not hand out shortcuts. To eat safely from this particular menu, an animal must know precisely where to seize its prey: by the head, or by the very tip of the tail, avoiding the spine by a matter of centimetres. It must know to toss and disorient a still dangerous ray, must even, it seems, release bursts of bubbles to coax buried prey from the seafloor.

Why New Zealand? Partly, I suspect, it is simple opportunity: an abundance of shallow, ray rich harbours not so easily found elsewhere. But opportunity alone is an insufficient answer, because the ocean is vast, and rays are hardly a New Zealand exclusive. What seems to have happened here is that the opportunity met a population capable of recognizing it, of developing the requisite skill, and, critically, of teaching that skill onward before it could be lost. 

I find something quietly moving in this. We are accustomed to thinking of evolution as a slow sculptor of bodies: teeth, fins, the architecture of a spine. But here, in a harbour that most of us will never see, is evolution shaping something else: a tradition. A body of knowledge, dangerous to acquire and costly to lose, held together by nothing more permanent than memory and the willingness of one generation to show another how it is done.

On a planet where so much of what other minds know is entirely closed to us, we have found, in a few shallow New Zealand harbours, a window: one through which we can watch a culture, not so unlike our own in its mechanics, teaching itself how to eat dangerously and live to tell about it.
